Senior Backend Engineer, Databases Tempo

About the role

Join the team building an open source distributed tracing backend that powers a managed cloud tracing service. The role focuses on scaling the platform and improving reliability for customers.

What you will do

• Lead multi-month technical projects from framing through rollout, including aggregation APIs and query engine work
• Own core parts of ingestion, storage, querying and metrics generation
• Improve customer experience by removing rough edges, confusing limits and hidden failure modes
• Scale the service from dozens of cells to triple digits using autoscaling and parameterized rollouts
• Build higher-density APIs and machine-friendly interfaces for downstream products and agents
• Improve query latency and support longer query ranges at high ingestion rates

What they look for

• Strong backend engineering experience with distributed systems
• Ability to take ownership of complex technical direction and mentor others
• Experience with databases, storage or query engines
• Comfort working remotely with distributed teams
• Solid written and spoken English
