Underwriting Director, Excess Casualty

About the role

Leads underwriting of excess casualty business across the western region, with a focus on wholesale partner relationships and a profitable middle-market book. Balances quick turnaround with disciplined coverage review and pricing.

What you will do

• Underwrite and grow profitable business within delegated authority and company targets
• Build and maintain wholesale agency relationships, including ending ties where needed
• Apply underwriting guidelines, tools, regulatory rules and personal authority in risk decisions
• Review applications, inspection reports, loss history, financial and third-party data to judge risk and reward
• Communicate product and service knowledge clearly in speech, writing and electronic channels
• Respond promptly and courteously to internal and external customers, and use metrics to improve territory results

What they look for

• Bachelor's degree plus at least 12 years of relevant experience, or 16 years of commercial insurance experience in place of a degree
• Knowledge of excess and surplus lines
• Ability to apply loss development and advanced loss analysis to price risk optimally
• Agency management experience
• Strong math aptitude, communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, plus spreadsheet and computer literacy

Nice to have

• Wholesale surplus lines experience
• CPCU, ARM or AU designations
• INS21, 22 and 23 or equivalent
• Eight or more years in commercial insurance
