About the role

A remote contract role building and running scalable payment infrastructure that supports revenue-critical flows. The engineer delivers payment features, reduces technical debt and modernises services.

What you will do

Build production backend features for payment flows
Refactor legacy services, raise test coverage and modernise APIs, including migrating off deprecated ones
Ship clean, well-tested code that passes CI/CD pipelines and peer review
Take part in code reviews, design discussions and sprint ceremonies, delivering within agreed cycles
Write designs, API specifications, runbooks and knowledge-transfer docs, then support handoff

What they look for

Three or more years of backend software engineering experience
Experience building and running production backend services at scale
Strong Java skills, with Kotlin and Python as complements
Payments, fintech or billing domain experience, such as gateways, processors or providers
Unit, integration and contract testing experience

Nice to have

Experience in a large enterprise engineering organisation
Spring Boot, Gradle and service mesh technologies
Datadog observability tooling
