Platform Architect and Backend Lead

About the role

Build a multi-tenant IoT platform from scratch, combining system architecture with hands-on backend development. The role also covers cloud infrastructure until a dedicated DevOps hire joins.

What you will do

• Design the end-to-end architecture from device connectivity and protocol ingestion through storage, APIs and real-time delivery
• Define tenant isolation, device lifecycle, protocol abstraction and a configurable rule engine
• Write architecture decision records for every major technical choice and plan scaling to large device fleets
• Build core services such as device management, telemetry ingestion, alerting, OTA updates and an API gateway
• Develop REST and GraphQL APIs plus WebSocket and SSE endpoints, with unit, integration and load tests
• Provision AWS environments with Terraform, set up CI/CD and monitoring, and manage least-privilege IAM

What they look for

• Seven to twelve years in software or systems engineering, including at least four years on IoT platform backends
• Deep MQTT knowledge covering versions 3.1 and 5.0 and topic hierarchies
• Experience with device authentication at scale, time-series ingestion and multi-tenant data isolation
• Ability to make architectural decisions independently and document them clearly
• Disciplined remote working, flagging risks early
