Staff Software Engineer, Backend

About the role

Set technical direction for distributed systems that deliver billions of messages daily. The role focuses on architecture decisions and raising the engineering bar rather than shipping more features.

What you will do

• Guide the architecture of mission-critical Go services where scale, cost and reliability compete
• Resolve ambiguous, high-stakes problems that cross team and function boundaries
• Build agreement on contested technical questions and explain tradeoffs to senior leaders
• Improve engineering process and tooling across several squads
• Take part in on-call rotation and in interviewing and candidate calibration

What they look for

• Several years as the go-to person for architecture, with depth in more than one domain
• A record of quantifying throughput, cost and reliability tradeoffs for production systems
• Experience treating observability and recovery as core design concerns
• Comfort with cloud-native environments, relational databases such as MySQL and performance tradeoffs
• Evidence of helping other engineers grow through mentorship, writing and design review
