Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Search)

About the role

A new team owns search and recommendation experiences for a shopping marketplace, while also exploring monetization and merchant value. The role sets technical direction and keeps systems reliable.

What you will do

• Define the team's technical strategy over a yearly horizon and connect it to business critical projects
• Work with product, design and analytics across the development lifecycle to surface risks and trade-offs
• Champion technical solutions and operational processes that multiply the team's effectiveness
• Own operations and availability, including monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing and alerting
• Raise quality and ownership through code review and design standards, writing and tech talks
• Grow engineers through feedback, guidance and personal example

What they look for

• Eight or more years designing, building and shipping large scale backend systems in Python or Kotlin
• Proven record with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
• Experience building consumer facing experiences with UI frameworks such as React
• Two or more years in search or comparable recommendation engines
• Track record delivering major features or retiring old functionality via a technical and execution plan
• Comfort with ambiguity, from low level language details to large system architecture
