The recurring advice is not a product at all: use a plain single-column document, keep it boring, and stop paying for templates. The disagreements start only after that.

How do you test a free builder before you pay?

Export a one-page test CV and read it as plain text before you commit any money. Two minutes is enough to find the problems the threads complain about.

• Export in the free tier and check whether the download is locked or carries a watermark.
• Open the PDF, select all text, paste it into a plain text editor and check that the lines come out in reading order.
• Check that skills appear as words, not as bars or stars.
• Check that dates and job titles stay next to the right employer.
• Look for your own name and email in the pasted text. If they are missing, they sit in an image or a header.

If the free export fails any of these checks, the paid plan will fail them too, because it uses the same export. Fix the problem first or choose another builder. A plain document from a word processor usually passes all five.

What should you read in the terms before you pay?

Read four things: the price after the trial, how renewal works, how you cancel, and what happens to your files afterwards. These are the points the angry threads are about, and each takes less than a minute to find.

Take a screenshot of the price page and the terms on the day you sign up, and put the end of the trial in your calendar. If a charge surprises you later, those two things make a refund request much easier.

The honest summary
