Senior FOIA Specialist

About the role

Support a federal Freedom of Information Act program, handling requests, appeals and Privacy Act matters while keeping the agency compliant with regulations and case law. The work involves careful review of large record sets and coordination across components.

What you will do

• Acknowledge incoming FOIA requests, appeals, referrals and consultations within required timeframes
• Review records for responsiveness, remove duplicates and apply redactions under FOIA rules and case law
• Decide procedural matters such as fee categories, waivers and expedited processing requests
• Draft search memoranda for the custodians who hold the records
• Oversee large collection efforts spanning several components and maintain administrative files

What they look for

• At least five years of experience processing FOIA requests
• A Juris Doctor degree
• FOIA processing experience gained as a federal employee or federal contractor
• Background handling complex requests involving submitter outreach, consultations and referrals
• Familiarity with FOIAXpress or a comparable tracking and processing system
• Strong analytical and writing abilities, with close attention to detail
